Critically acclaimed restaurant Thali opened its doors in November 2008 and has been serving superb authentic Indian tapas ever since. The interior has been carefully renovated and provides a stylish, contemporary space in which to dine. With a mixture of soft creams, muted browns and vibrant reds, the restaurant exudes sophistication whilst still remaining relaxed and unpretentious - a tricky balance. Those dining at Thali will be relieved not to find any inauthentic, creamy, over-rich curries on the menu, as the restaurant insists on serving only traditional, fresh Indian food. The aim is to educate customers about quality Indian cuisine, providing well-balanced, healthy Indian dishes with distinct flavours. All meals are served in a traditional stainless steel dish in a tapas (thali) style, meaning diners get several dishes in one meal and the ingredients are locally sourced. There is a great range of starters or light snacks available to begin your meal - popular choices include the vegetarian gol guppa and the gazab ka tikka, bite-size chicken breast marinated in a flavoursome blend of ginger, garlic and Punjabi masalas. For the main course, the base thali comes with an accompaniment of rice and naan and also the choice of daal (spiced lentils) or raita (yoghurt). Diners can then choose several delicious katori (tapas dishes) from the extensive menu - the excellent vegetarian daal makhani, which consists of black lentils simmered overnight in the tandoor with tomatoes and cream, is a house speciality. The restaurant is also perfect for events and parties, with room for parties of up to 30 people, and there is a great Christmas menu for a festive meal with a difference.
Shortlisted for Best Newcomer by the Glasgow Restaurant Association at the time of print, Thali will surpass your expectations of Indian food - with a dedication to fresh flavours, nutritionally balanced tapas-style meals and locally sourced ingredients, it is clear this isn't your usual Indian restaurant. Perfect for Christmas, Valentine's Day or, indeed, any other celebration you might think of, Thali provides great drinks, great food and expert service - a perfect combination.
