Osteria Piero
Osterio Piero's 90 years of experience says it all. This rustic Italian eatery is filled with beautiful furniture, with hanging ceiling lamps emitting a delightful warm glow.
The team behind Osteria Piero are serious about their ingredients, and that means sourcing only the finest produce from the surrounding area, as well as from Italy itself. Dine here and you'll be treated to prosciutto di Parma, first-pressed extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and 24-month-old Parmiggiano reggiano, as well as homemade pasta made using only the finest Italian flour. Enjoy a two-course lunch menu for just £9.95 - the assortment of cured Italian meats, followed by the pork stew on a bed of freshly prepared polenta is an excellent choice; alternatively, go for fresh West Coast mussels with tomato, garlic, chilli and parsley, followed by bucatini all'amatriciana - bucatini pasta with pig cheek, tomato and pecorino Romana cheese.
Alternatively, the à la carte menu boasts a multitude of choices. Each dish is lovingly created, and you will be delighted whatever you opt for. The 'il grande tagliere' - a vast selection of cured meats, cheeses, bruschetta, marinated vegetables, pickles, olives and seafood - is particularly popular, and just the thing to share with a fellow foodie. Of course, only the freshest ingredients are used.
As you would expect from any Italian restaurant, the wine list is extensive and carefully put together; a detailed description is available for each listed wine, and the staff are particularly knowledgeable when it comes to marrying food and drink - just ask and they'll be glad to help. Unsurprisingly, Osteria Piero won 'Best Italian Restaurant of the Year' in Scotland at the 2010 Scottish Restaurant Awards. This is an Italian with a difference, with the awards to prove it - but don't just take my word for it, book a table tonight and see for yourself.
