Japanese dining need not be a hurried affair in a clinical environment - simply visit Oko Express and see for yourself. With a red, black and white colour scheme and Manga illustrations adorning the walls, menus and placemats, this eatery has all the stylish allure of its competitors but with added traditional undertones.
We went for a sushi platter for two, which could have easily fed four. They say you eat with your eyes first, and watching the expert chef prepare our food fresh in front of us at the sushi bar certainly proved a visual feast. Stars of the show were the inside-out California rolls - this mooli, avocado and crabstick combination delivered heaps of flavour. Tempura, yakitori and gyoza dumplings graced a second platter, accompanied by the best miso soup I've ever tasted. As a main, my partner had beautifully tender beef teriyaki on a delicious mash of sweet potato and butternut squash - highly recommended. I dived into karai kaisen - a luscious, slightly sweet broth of coconut, lime and spices which came brimming with grilled prawns and chunky bites of sea bass. Green tea with free refills provides a refreshing drink throughout your meal, and a final course of light green tea ice cream sufficed for me while my partner chose a creamy citrus creme brulée. A great place for a quick bite or full meal, and ideal for a real taste of the Orient in the Highlands.
