Run by two school friends from Arran, Number 16 stands out in the metropolitan Byres Road for its bijou charm and neighbourhood feel, delivering highly creative and seasonal dishes with a personal touch. The pre-theatre and à la carte menus are innovative yet well-balanced. Seared coley works brilliantly with a spiced daal, while the in-house smoked duck starter represents exceptional value. Roast pork belly combined with a seasonal pumpkin gratin was on my plate for mains, and the dish was enhanced by a sweet apple purée and piccalilli. To finish, a mammoth homemade sticky toffee pudding glistened with butterscotch sauce. Number 16’s attention to detail and intimate surrounds have earned the restaurant an established reputation as one of the most appealing restaurants in Glasgow’s West End.
