Fanny Trollope was a Brazilian woman who stowed away on a banana boat bound for Portugal. Thanks to a captain with poor navigation skills, she ended up in Glasgow’s Finnieston district. And, if you should find yourself in this area, unintentionally or otherwise, you must pay a visit to Fanny Trollope’s Bistro.

Reflecting a commitment to providing honest locally sourced food, the menu here is based around traditional Celtic food and features wholesome, rustic cuisine with many a modern twist. The menu changes often depending on what the chef can lay his hands on, so no visit to Fanny Trollope’s will be the same as the last. Starters might include Stornoway black pudding served atop a mound of mashed potatoes and crowned with a poached egg, or Loch Fyne smoked salmon with potato and dill pancakes. Expect to find main courses like roast pork belly with smoked fennel and paprika, and tender haunch of Perthshire venison with sweet red cabbage. To finish your meal with a flourish, choose one of the scrumptious desserts – on a recent, very memorable visit, I chose the poached rhubarb with a sabayon flavoured with white wine, strawberry and vanilla essence.

With bags of atmosphere and plenty of character, Fanny Trollope’s is the perfect place to enjoy some of Scotland’s finest seasonal produce.
