Next August the Wu family will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their immensely popular restaurant. Located in what is now Glasgow’s Chinatown, Chinatown (the restaurant) was one of the leading establishments in the area to bring together the large Cantonese population.

We were treated to dim sum on a Saturday lunchtime amid the bustle of families and laughter. The enormous crystal chandelier and luminous fish tank give Chinatown a sense glamour, and when the bustle dies down in the evening, the overall atmosphere becomes rather romantic. We started with king prawn, scallop, pork and crab dim sum with char siu cheung fun – crisp pastry wrapped around slow-cooked smoky pork. The dim sum were perfect – light, springy and bursting with flavour. For mains, we shared an enormous mixed roast with noodles – fresh-roasted pork belly (char siu) and duck, with Fujian fried rice of scallops, prawns, duck, chicken and Chinese vegetables. The dishes were huge and steamed with exotic aromas – it is traditional for families to order several large plates for sharing. Perfect for a large family event but also ideal for a quiet dinner with friends, Chinatown is excellent value for money.
