Healthy and wholesome are not the first words that spring to mind when you think of curry. But Bukharah serves creative Indian cuisine that is as good for you as it is delicious. Marukh Butt, the UK's first female Asian head chef, has created an exciting menu that caters for all preferences. Her talent was honed at the five-star Sheraton Hotel in Dubai, and now she brings her passion and precision to a new set of diners, all of whom will be bowled over by her gastronomic finesse.

Step through the doors of this modern eatery and you'll find a low-key, refined atmosphere with simple, dark furniture and exposed brickwork. The restaurant radiates charm, as glasses gleam and waiters flash warm smiles. Mindful of the seasons, Bukharah transforms its menu according to the time of year. Of course, all food is fresh and packed with the nutrition you need to feel invigorated.

From the off, I was impressed by the wide-ranging menu. Eventually, after consulting an amiable and knowledgeable waiter, I picked the dosa for starters. The delicious, spicy pancake arrived steaming, stuffed with ground lentils, prawns and enticing spices. Each mouthful had my tastebuds singing and I could have eaten three more. But alas, I needed to save room for mains.

I am hardly adventurous when it comes to curry, and ordinarily would opt for a korma, which I could devour all day long. But in this exquisite establishment I resolved to push the boat out, and so ordered the chicken xacuti, a fiery, dry chicken curry made with coconut, tamarind and a blend of rare spices. I was blown away. Sure, it was hot, but the coconut and tamarind helped to lace the dish with sweetness and zing.

I left Bukharah feeling revitalised. My eyes were opened wide to a new world of curry, where ingredients were fresh and flavourful. I will think twice now before ordering a curry in a hurry on a Saturday night, and will make sure I head to Bukharah instead.
