Hidden away in trendy Merchant City, Arta feels like a portal transporting you to a vision of Spain that's frozen in time, but lavishly stylised. This beautiful restaurant features a lovely table for two on a balcony that conjures visions of Romeo and Juliet, looking over the delightful internal courtyard - it's so romantic that a small plaque over the table reads 'if he doesn't propose here, he never will'. The venue offers all sorts of night-time opportunities - an intimate dinner à deux, a boisterous supper party, a wedding reception or a relaxing evening reclining on embroidered sofas. You can drink, dine, dance and romance all under the same roof.
We were promptly seated and ordered a selection of tapas - plates crowding every inch of our table. I would particularly recommend the serrano-ham-wrapped pigeon breasts, which were pink and delicate, served atop crispy roast potatoes. To follow, we ordered the gorgeous paella, and were far from disappointed. The generous portions were suitable for sharing - ours lavishly loaded with chicken, fish and shellfish of an astonishing variety. The puddings were fresh and thematic. The crema Catalana was rich but gentle, and the poached peaches came with a refreshing cinnamon ice cream. It's hard to imagine a more captivating environment in which to enjoy a food-filled evening than this extravagant corner of the Mediterranean, nestled in the heart of Glasgow.
