Three years ago, the popular Amber Restaurant on Byres Road experienced a revamp of considerable proportions – receiving much more than a mere lick of paint. Its current fresh and classy layout features intimate booths alongside traditional dining tables and window seats overlooking the bustling West End. Starting with a warm greeting to welcome you in from the wild Scottish weather, the atmosphere and service will impress you before you even think about ordering.

Take your time over the menu, as it’s full of stand-out dishes, each looking more appetising than the last. There are classics such as Szechuan-style chicken and Singapore chow mein, but there’s also a variety of hidden gems. Our starters included delicious crab claws with a sweet dipping sauce and deep-fried squid in batter, which was commended after just one mouthful.

A selection of main dishes made a memorable evening, especially when we tucked in to Amber’s colourful signature curry – textured and packed full of spices – and a sumptuous portion of king prawns in sweet chilli. There is a takeaway option for those after a cosy night in, but take note, this fine purveyor of Chinese cuisine is unquestionably worth visiting.
