The Harrow, with its ornately-carved dark wood bar and relaxed ambience, is a charming Victorian pub centrally located within the busy town of Galashiels. Father and son team Richard and Barry Green took over the pub in early 2007 and have focused on building a reputation for serving good quality homemade pub grub in a warm and hospitable atmosphere. The steady stream of patrons attests to the success of their venture.
The menu includes classic pub favourites such as fish and chips and homemade steak burgers as well as baguettes and baked potatoes. For anyone wanting a light snack I can recommend the homemade soup of the day. I tried the carrot soup, which was flavoursome with a peppery kick. The generous portions of nachos featured all the essentials; crisp tortilla chips, hot melted cheese, spicy salsa, sour cream and a liberal helping of jalapenos.
In keeping with the Scottish location, the breast of chicken with haggis is a popular choice. The chicken was moist, succulent and stuffed with plenty of rich flavourful haggis. This delectable combination was smothered in a creamy wholegrain mustard and whisky sauce. Lovers of traditional pub food will delight in the steak and ale pie with its crisp puff pastry top and well-cooked steak in rich ale gravy. Both meals are served with vegetables and potatoes or home-cut chips. I can definitely recommend the chips - fluffy and fantastic. Friendly, attentive service, good food and a quality pint of local Belhaven Best make for a very satisfying meal.
Richard and Barry recognise the need to appeal to a wide market and to this end they offer a two-course weekday pensioners' lunch for £5 and also have a children's licence with a comprehensive kids' menu. Despite fierce competition from more commercial competitors they succeed in offering excellent value meals at very reasonable prices. The Harrow is a wonderful place for anyone, tourists and locals alike, looking for an authentic pub experience.
