The New Inn
Right on the main road that winds through the Berwickshire village of Coldingham is the charming New Inn – a traditional pub with a fantastic restaurant.
The dining area is relaxed and welcoming, with understated, white-washed walls decorated with striking photography from a bygone era. As for the food, it’s local, fresh and delicious. Chef and owner Andrew Penman, along with chef Donald Whyte, expertly creates eye-popping, mouth-watering dishes using the best local produce. Whilst the menu and specials board feature a range of meat and vegetarian dishes, the chefs’ true expertise lies in the preparation of fish, which comes from nearby Eyemouth. To start perhaps choose the hearty seafood chowder or a special such as sweet, succulent confit of tiger prawns. Mains, like haddock and crayfish mornay with crushed potatoes or wild Border venison, are packed with deliciously rich flavours. All plates come with seasonal vegetables that snap or fresh zesty salad. If you have room for more, try one of The New Inn’s indulgent desserts – the freshly made apple and plum crumble, served with ice cream or cream, will satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth.
The New Inn is deservedly very popular with locals and visitors alike, so do book to avoid disappointment. If you have something special to celebrate, there’s a 25-cover dining room upstairs that can be booked for private functions, and a 35-cover function room, Cloisters, which has its own bar and is a great setting for a party.
