This impressive grade-II-listed building is an unmissable landmark on the A376 Exmouth Road running through Lympstone village. Completely refurbished in December 2007, the delightful setting, ample parking and fresh, contemporary decor of this charming lodge all bode well for a first-class meal.
Graham and Val Williams, themselves both talented chefs, manage Nutwell Lodge with a thoroughly professional flair, and their enthusiasm for good hospitality, as well as their desire to create a welcoming atmosphere, is evident from the moment they greet you. Graham and Val's passion for food is also plain to see and their on-going commitment to using only the finest local foods demonstrates a genuine love for what they do.
Attention to detail comes first and foremost at Nutwell Lodge, and being attuned to restaurant-goers' needs is paramount for this highly-skilled management team. In keeping with this professional approach, it is indeed noteworthy that when Nutwell Lodge was refurbished, care was taken to retain snugs and more private places to dine, along with the lovely open and light feel of the main restaurant area. A soup is often a ready indicator of the head chef's insistence on quality and, to this end, I savoured the tomato and basil soup of the day. This was absolutely excellent, with rich, complete, piquant flavours and superb texture. The moules mariniere, served with artisan bread, were embraced by a delicate liquor, which had been reduced during preparation to just the right delicious consistency. Nutwell Lodge's signature provision has to be its splendid carvery. Again, all of the ingredients involved are from the local area. The tender meats - I sampled three - were succulent and flavoursome and the freshness of the vegetables was apparent in every mouthful.
Talk to Nutwell Lodge staff about the local maitre patissier who provides their desserts - the vanilla and strawberry roulade was out of this world. I would recommend this carvery restaurant any day of the week.
