Opened in 2005 by renowned British-Bangladeshi restaurateur Iqbal Wahhab, and set close to London Bridge, Roast offers true British dining in the heart of the capital.

The main draw has to be the reassuringly traditional, deliciously updated dishes on the menu; and the fact these feature only ethically sourced, top-quality produce. Those who care about the provenance of their food will be on cloud nine. Appetisers include marinated Cornish squid with rocket and a poppy-seed bloomer, to be followed by crispy Goosnargh chicken breast with blue cheese and vine tomatoes, or slow-roast Wicks Manor pork belly with mashed potatoes and Bramley apple sauce.

Alternatively, pop in for drinks and food in the bar; there's a remarkable list of tipples, including local beers and ciders that are exclusively made for Roast by Kent's Whitstable Brewery. For those in a rush, the Roast To Go sandwich stall is a great place to grab lunch to take away. If you do have time to eat in, however, watching Lawrence Keogh (author of Food For Life) and his team preparing your food in the theatre kitchen is an unmissable experience.
