Mele e Pere is truly one of London’s hidden gems, tucked away just a few streets from the brightly lit and hugely populated thoroughfare that is Piccadilly Circus. When we arrived on a Wednesday evening, there were several large groups all scrambling to get a table at this much-loved restaurant, so booking is highly recommended.

A seemingly small building from the street, downstairs hides an urban cavern filled with quirky furniture and chic city diners, and the polished service is worthy of any top London eatery. Having been open for five years, it is clear that Mele e Pere’s reputation has been spread by word of mouth, and the food really speaks for itself.

We began with stracciatella, pickled red beetroot and coriander seeds, with hints of lemon bursting through the creamy Italian cheese, and deep-fried squid with smoked aioli. For mains, my partner indulged in 28-day-aged Surrey Farm rib-eye with Barolo sauce and a side of chips. The quality of the meat was undeniable, as was my own wonderful dish: potato gnocchi with Umbrian black truffle. Presented innovatively, my dessert of vanilla panna cotta with raspberries arrived in a jam jar on a wooden chopping board, while my companion’s choice of homemade tiramisu with espresso ice cream reminded us that this is a menu that aims to delight the senses. Be sure to ask your host (or even the owner, Peter) for wine pairings, as the suggestions we tried were new to us but matched the dishes perfectly.
