Whighams Wine Cellars has stood in the heart of Edinburgh's West End, just a two-minute walk from Princes Street, for over 25 years - situated in the basement of an original Georgian wine cellar. Descend the narrow stairs and find intimate alcoves, original stone walls and now, a newer and brighter extension that creates an open, airy dining space.

The daily changing menu places emphasis on seafood, although meat and vegetarian dishes are also offered. All ingredients are locally sourced by head chef Douglas Lyall, who has headed up the kitchen at Whighams for over 15 years. Starters commonly featured include a traditional Scottish soup, Cullen Skink, and Loch Fyne oysters served with a delicious vinaigrette. Prices start at just £3.50 and don't go much higher than £8.95. Main courses are equally good value, ranging from £8.95 up to £15.95 for Whighams' famous chilled seafood platter. This popular dish, which features on the menu every day, is a mouth-watering medley of oysters, langoustine, clams, mussels and smoked salmon. Hot dishes on the menu include a king prawn and monkfish Thai-style curry and, for meat lovers, a hearty beef and ale casserole.

Puddings start at £3.45, with a selection of British and Irish cheeses to share for just £7.95. The sticky toffee pudding is Douglas' speciality, and a must for those with a sweet tooth. A good selection of dessert wines will complement your choice, along with a range of speciality teas and Fairtrade coffees.

Whighams has always prided itself on its extensive wine list, and offers 35 options by the glass. There is a good balance of traditional Old World classics, including claret, alongside some interesting and less well-known varieties from the New World. There are 100 wines, ranging from £13.95 to £45 a bottle, and Champagne (including Bollinger Special Cuvée) served at just £9.95 per glass - the perfect excuse to head down the steps, find a cosy corner and spend a few wonderful hours in the Cellars.
