Urban Angel
Urban Angel is something of an Edinburgh institution – offering first-class, ethical dining in a modern world. The owners provide the busy city-dwellers of central Edinburgh with a taste of the countryside, using only the best quality seasonal produce, all served up in a cool, laid-back manner for maximum enjoyment.
To kick things off, we shared some tapas. The succulent lamb meatballs arrived in a delightfully spicy tomato ragu, while the grilled halloumi served with a couscous salad was light and tasty. The final plate contained two crisp spring rolls stuffed with tender duck confit, accompanied by a sweet plum jelly. Two huge haddock fishcakes followed, served with a rocket and endive salad and sauce gribiche. Full of creamy mash and smoky fish, the crumbed patties were a real delight, while the special of pumpkin and butternut squash risotto tasted extraordinarily fresh. After much agonising, we finally settled on dessert. The homemade kiwi and cherry sorbets were incredibly flavoursome, while the baked New York vanilla cheesecake was out of this world.
Great service, hip surroundings and delicious free-range, Fairtrade, largely organic food – what more could the eco-conscious diner possibly want? And the prices prove that eating ethically doesn’t have to cost the earth.
