Make your grand entrance at the Theatre Royal Bar and be welcomed by an electric buzz and a vibrant atmosphere akin to that of a green room. A sensational island bar – an increasingly rare breed in Edinburgh – is the undisputed focal point. Spacious leather booths sit below fine chandeliers, the glow from which bounces off framed posters of shows gone by.

The menu at the Theatre Royal Bar certainly offers more than just ‘pub grub’, and we found a number of sophisticated dishes alongside more typical fare. Our haggis filo pastry with cranberry sauce was cooked to perfection – a bold twist on a Scottish classic. Other stars of the show included the grilled fillet of Scottish salmon accompanied by Oriental vegetables, and my indulgent sticky toffee pudding – quite simply one of the best I have had outside my mother’s kitchen.

Despite being situated in the heart of the capital’s entertainment district, seconds from the Playhouse Theatre and numerous comedy bars and live music venues, prices are extremely reasonable. This, combined with professional service, dynamic surroundings and, of course, that beautiful bar, has made the Theatre Royal a firm favourite for theatre-goers as well as those who enjoy the energy and excitement associated with showbusiness.

Put simply, do not be surprised if your meal at the Theatre Royal Bar almost beats the show itself.
