Tucked away in an unassuming corner just off Rose Street, The New York Steam Packet is surely one of Edinburgh's best-kept secrets. Once inside, the intimate setting works perfectly, with the open kitchen allowing diners to see the jolly chefs hard at work.

There is something to please everyone on the starters list; I opted for the deep-fried potato skins with a Harlem dip - a superb and perfectly seasoned dish. I was assured from across the table that the mussels in garlic, onions, cream and white wine were also expertly flavoured. When it came to the mains, we figured that it made no sense to come to The New York Steam Packet and not sample what they are famous for: their steak. The sirloin with peppercorn and brandy sauce did not disappoint; the quality of the meat was evident from the very first mouthful. I plumped for the homemade beef burger, which was juicy and tender, tasting exactly how a proper burger should. If you're looking for something more artery-friendly, then chicken, salmon and vegetarian options are also available.

The pudding options are not for the fainthearted (or waistline-conscious); the chocolate fudge cake and toffee crunch Dime Bar cake were every bit as decadent as they sound, certifying our impression that The New York Steam Packet delivers good quality food at really reasonable prices, in truly unique surroundings.
