In June 2006, The Kitchin - a new wave of Michelin-star quality dining - arrived on Leith's shore, and has since taken the restaurant scene by storm, proving it has real star quality.
Husband and wife team Tom (chef profile page 31) and Michaela Kitchin share a passion for food that resonates throughout the waterfront restaurant. Reflecting the restaurant's philosophy, 'From Nature to Plate', Tom Kitchin presents a menu that is always in keeping with the seasons and demonstrates his passion for Scottish produce. The restaurant serves modern British cuisine influenced by French cooking techniques and an appreciation of the best ingredients available from Scotland's outstanding natural larder.
In January 2007, after only seven months of operation, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star, making Tom Kitchin, at only 29, the youngest ever chef proprietor to hold the distinction. In July 2008, The Kitchin restaurant was also awarded one of the most prestigious honours in the British hospitality industry as it collected a Caterer and Hotelkeeper Award (Catey Award) in London for 'Newcomer of the Year 2008'. This accolade added to the restaurant's multiple award wins, which include the 'Scottish Chef of the Year 2007', The List's 'Restaurant of the Year 2007' and CIS Excellence Awards' 'Restaurant Newcomer of the Year 2007', as well as an impressive three AA rosettes in September 2007.
In September 2008, The Kitchin received nationwide recognition when it was named 'Restaurant of the Year, Scotland' at the AA Centenary Awards, just one day after it was named one of the top ten restaurants in the UK outside of London - the only Scottish restaurant to be honoured at the London Restaurant Awards. But don't just take our word for it - find out for yourself why The Kitchin can't stop winning praise. This is a restaurant that shouldn't be missed.
