Walking down Edinburgh’s Rose Street on a brisk evening is always wonderful stimulation for the senses – and as something of an honorary local, I thought I had seen, tasted and heard it all before. I was forced to think again as I entered the Mussel Inn.
Its constantly evolving menu incorporates the nation’s finest seafood, ethically sourced from the waters in and around Scotland. Shellfish features heavily, and the hot seafood platter in particular caught my eye. Lovingly presented, this smorgasbord allows the diner to experience the very best the kitchen has to offer, with no stone (or indeed shell) left unturned. Further acclaim must be awarded to the house speciality – the steaming kilogram pots of mussels. A stunning array of flavours and combinations, from delicate shallot to fiery jalapeno and salsa, ensures that even the most discerning diner won’t be disappointed. Those wishing to push the boundaries need look no further than the specials board, where some of the chef’s most innovative dishes await your selection.
The surroundings here are elegantly simple and stay true to the restaurant’s nautical roots, while the knowledgeable and friendly waiting staff provide a warm but professional service. The Mussel Inn easily rates among the capital’s best seafood restaurants, therefore reservations are highly recommended.
