If you’re after an authentic taste of Spain, then Malvarosa is the restaurant for you. Owner Alvaro Bernabeu grew up in Madrid and takes inspiration from his mother’s authentic Spanish cooking. Luckily for the residents of Edinburgh, he has brought the flavours of his youth to Portobello High Street.

Homemade bread with juicy olives is a fantastic way to start. Next, a warm winter salad of asparagus, artichoke, broad beans and pancetta, the delicately fried pollo al ajillo (garlic chicken) and the spicy chorizo a la sidra were all exceptional. The Santiago tart dessert was as good as any almond tart in Spain, and the Manchego cheese with membrillo (quince jelly) tasted as fantastic as it looked.

Diners can bring their beverage of choice to Malvarosa. Make sure you bring something good – food of such high calibre deserves a quality accompaniment.
