Iglu is Edinburgh's charming answer to all your understated-dining desires. You are immediately welcomed with a friendly smile and warm hospitality, and this homely warmth is reflected in the menu. Iglu is famous for sourcing local, wild and organic produce and this attention to detail is evident in the food, which is wonderfully devoid of fuss. This is a menu that has been assembled with a focus on the ingredients, giving them the space to shine through. The menu varies in accordance with the changing of the seasons and is generally changed every other month.

I tucked straight into the soup of the day: roasted red peppers and tomatoes with homemade bread. Married pleasantly with a velvety butter, this bread was made to be dipped. For my main course I plumped for the wild boar burger - succulent and full of flavour, the idea to serve it without the bun was not only a winner for my waistline but also my palate, as the flavour of the meat took centre stage. A Scottish lamb and venison sausage cassoulet with butterbeans is another popular choice - a dish I was assured was a beautifully rich blend of flavours. Other menu options include witch sole stuffed with chorizo and sweet pepper, or perhaps the vegetarian offering of caramelised shallot, beetroot and goat's cheese puff pastry pie might take your fancy.

Pudding presented a difficult choice. I was not to be beaten by my generous burger and delicious homemade chips, and ordered a dark chocolate mousse with hazelnut praline. Put simply, this was the best dessert I have had in Edinburgh. The mousse was rich, yet fluffy, and my heart sank when I reached the bottom of the glass. Other dessert options include an apricot and nutmeg crumble or a rum and passionfruit cheesecake, both of which I saw diners tucking into with great aplomb. Iglu is a restaurant that knows what it is doing and is excellent at what it does.
