Tucked away in a quiet corner of Newington, this unassuming restaurant is a charming blend of the comfortable and the elegant. Twinkling chandeliers and white classical columns stand out against warm red walls, while padded leathertopped tables and an eclectic collection of paintings and individual wall sconces lend a relaxed bistro feel to the main dining room. The effect is classy but not intimidating, which is perhaps a good way to describe what this restaurant is all about. From the food to the service and decor, Hewat’s offers low-key fine dining in a comfortable, attractive setting. The dishes are all well-executed and attractively presented – solid interpretations of Scottish classics, drawing on fine Scottish produce.

Given the often elevated cost of dining out in Edinburgh, Hewat’s also offers refreshingly reasonable prices. The menu presents notable starters such as wild mushroom and lemon thyme with herb croutons and pan-fried black pudding with haggis risotto with crispy pancetta. For the main course, expect exquisite seafood dishes such as the seared fillet of sea bass, salmon and langoustine with light garlic fish nagè, served with crushed potatoes and sugar snap peas. To finish, the miniature desserts are works of art and a pleasure to share. The cosy nooks and crannies of the restaurant are the perfect setting for an intimate family meal or a catch-up with friends, making this culinary establishment something of a hidden gem.
