Sometimes slogans can be misleading. However, Gurkha Brigade's motto is one which rings true - they really do bring 'Nepalese dining to the heart of Edinburgh', much to the enjoyment of diners all over the city.

Inside, you will be greeted by friendly, knowledgeable staff. Not really knowing what to expect from the menu, I consulted the owners who suggested I try some of the chef's recommendations. The starters were delicious. After much deliberation, we chose aloo chop, mashed potatoes mixed with herbs and spices, coated in spiced gram flour and deep fried until deliciously golden; and chicken pakora, which was perfectly crispy without being dry. These splendid starters left me eagerly anticipating the main courses - mismas bhat and Nepali tarkari with rice, naan and dahl on the side. The mismas bhat consisted of fragrant fried rice with chicken, lamb, prawns and mushrooms, crowned with a fried egg and accompanied by a delicate sauce that married the rice and meat marvellously. The Nepali tarkari (tarkari being Nepalese for curry) was a tasty concoction offering up subtle flavours of ginger, garlic and mustard. Though all the dishes were delicious, this was definitely my favourite. The naan bread was also superb - not too doughy, but with enough substance to soak up all the wonderful sauces.

There was little room left for dessert, but the choices were too alluring to turn down. The toffee ice cream was delicious, and not as rich as it may sound, and the vanilla ice cream with almonds and honey was the perfect palate-cleansing way to finish the meal. Having lived in Edinburgh for 18 months, my only regret is that I did not stumble upon this little gem sooner.
