Gandhi's
Gandhi's has been serving Indian delicacies with expertise and passion since 2003. When she was just 25, owner Zaida Khan opened this small but perfectly formed restaurant, and her reward has been a loyal following of national and international travellers who come for the delicacy of the spices, the knowledgeable service and the deliciousness inherent in every dish. Gandhi's couldn't be found in a more convenient location; in Edinburgh's West End, just off Lothian Road, this restaurant is ideally placed for a break from hitting the shops and equally for an evening meal of epic proportions.
You might like to start with sesame chicken marinated in a light spice and mustard, dipped in breadcrumbs and sesame seeds, fried until golden and served with a salad garnish, or indulge in the creamy tang of stuffed jalapenos, filled with cream cheese and lightly spiced - a surprising palate teaser. Main courses supply much variety, with choices ranging from familiar and subtle butter chicken to exciting and exotic chicken badshahi with spring onions, green peppers and tomatoes, wrapped up in a delicate medium hot sauce. Classic favourites are also offered - from rogan josh to vindaloo - as are vegetarian choices like mushroom dupiaza. There are also salmon creations and lots of accompaniments to complement.
The full menu is available to take away, but there is plenty of value for money available if you decide to eat in. Set dinner menus are available from just £16.95 and might include selections like charcoal-roasted chicken or lamb cutlets cooked in a medium sauce of chef's own special recipe, chicken or lamb balti, pakora and pilau rice with a fluffy naan bread to complete your feast. Set thali lunches are priced between £6.95 and £10.50, presenting a medley of exotic spice and available as either vegetable, king prawn, lamb or chicken varieties between midday and 2pm every day. So, if you live nearby, break with your habitual dining destinations and try something different. Gandhi's might just become your new favourite restaurant - it is certainly mine.
If all goes to plan, Gandhi's will have a new larger premises later this year, so check the website for details.
