Bonsai brings all the flavour of the Far East to Edinburgh with a welcoming ambience, friendly service and, of course, all your favourite Japanese dishes.

The restaurant may be small, but it’s perfectly formed, attracting a varied clientele. Flags and Japanese memorabilia adorn the walls while the daily specials board tempts you with the likes of nabe (Japanese hotpot) and wasabi peas. I chose the delicious teriyaki beef, which was cooked in classic sweet soy sauce with a side of gohan (Japanese steamed rice). My partner’s choice of breaded chicken katsu with tonkatsu sauce, salmon maki and yakisoba (traditional noodles) also proved a hit. Whether you’re a sushi fan or simply looking to challenge your palate and try something new, Bonsai is well worth a visit.
