Above Restaurant at The Abbotsford
As the name suggests, Above Restaurant is set directly above internationally acclaimed pub, The Abbotsford. Jenners, a department store nearby, commissioned the redesign of the pub in 1902, and the spectacular results of this can still be seen today. The opulent Jacobean ceiling and the island bar, which was elaborately carved from Spanish mahogany, have been carefully preserved for modern-day guests to enjoy.
Above Restaurant opened in 2007 and has been refurbished in line with the historical look and feel of the building. The intimate and elegant dining room, which affords views over bustling Rose Street, was packed with a mix of regulars and vacationers when we visited. We soon discovered why – the fantastic menu is packed with tempting dishes.
My starter of smoked salmon with roasted beetroot and vinaigrette dressing had a delightfully deep, aromatic flavour. The mains were a testament to the high quality of Scottish farming – the 8oz Borders sirloin steak was a notable highlight, with venison and pheasant also catching our eye. Our tastebuds were treated to a remarkably refreshing blackcurrant sorbet, which complemented the 2005 South African pinotage in a way that must be tasted to be understood.
This restaurant’s inspiring menu, outstanding hospitality and refined atmosphere ensures a dining experience that’s a cut above the rest.
