Whitecroft Mansion
Sitting proudly in three acres of its own grounds, Whitecroft Mansion is an elegant Georgian country house in the heart of the Dumfriesshire countryside. Located in the small hamlet of Carrutherstown, the Whitecroft enjoys breathtaking views of the Solway Coast.
The mansion has been restored to the finest standards, oozing luxury and flamboyant style. High ceilings, open fires and exposed beams give the Whitecroft a charming olde worlde feel, as do the swords, helmets and shields that decorate the walls of the large flag-stoned dining hall.
The exciting menu might be the only thing that will draw your attention away from the lavish surroundings - start with tender Thai duck on fine ribbons of cucumber with a yoghurt dip, or little quenelles of rabbit paté served with delicious red onion marmalade and crumbly Arran oat cakes. For the main course, expect to find such treats as medallions of red deer, piled on creamy asparagus risotto and surrounded by a rich game reduction. Or try the tender breast of wild goose, pan seared and laid on mashed potato lightly flavoured with truffle. If you've got room for anything else, what better choice than the lemon cheesecake with vanilla ice cream - more a work of art than a dessert. Served on a spider's web pattern of cream and strawberry sauce, and topped with fresh strawberries and a spun sugar adornment, it really must be seen to be believed. Finish with a freshly brewed tea or coffee, served with a delightful little assortment of homemade petit fours. All that's left to do now is to sink into one of the inviting leather armchairs in the oak-panelled haven known as Bruce's Snug. And if all that food has made you sleepy, Whitecroft Mansion has a charming selection of rooms, many with ornate mirrors, chaise longues and four-poster beds. Wonderfully extravagant.
