Dumfries
The Aston Hotel
Sometimes you can just stare at a menu, feasting your eyes on the endless tasty possibilities and struggling to decide on just one combination: Brasserie 59 at The Aston Hotel in Dumfries has one such menu. There's something for everyone here, and I couldn't resist the delicious starter of hand-dived West Coast scallops with cauliflower purée, crispy pancetta and a balsamic dressing; my companion was in raptures over her baked Capricorn goat's cheese with petit ratatouille. Main dishes include pan-fried fillet of Buccleuch beef, roast loin of lamb and chargrilled aubergine galette. From the array of divine creations, I plumped for the succulent pan-fried duck breast with perfectly crispy skin, while my friend opted for the succulent Buccleuch sirloin steak. The locally sourced produce adds an unmistakable freshness and subtlety of flavour to every dish - we were not disappointed.
Served by friendly staff, in surroundings accented by soft lighting and neutral colours, we had the most relaxing time. The venue is bustling at weekends, mainly with hotel guests, but also with locals who enjoy fine food and drink in a classic setting. With a bottle of 2008 Crusan Colombard sauvignon blanc flowing nicely, we were in the mood to try something sweet before leaving The Aston. A sticky toffee pudding with a butterscotch sauce, and profiteroles filled with sweet cream and covered in a rich, bittersweet chocolate sauce topped off a delicious meal.
The Aston Hotel is situated on the northern side of the Solway Firth on the beautiful Crichton Estate, and has already gained a reputation as one of the finest hotels in the area.
