The Compasses Inn
Surrounded by rural Essex countryside, this is an ideal getaway for walkers, cyclists or those simply enjoying a day out. Owned by a member of the Ridley family (of the Essex brewery), the pub offers the humble, traditional simplicity of a bygone era. All their beer is stored in the cellar and comes straight from the tap. Foodwise, the pub is well-known for its ‘Huffers’ – bread baps filled with tasty fillings, either hot or cold, which are as big as they are delicious. Homemade dishes including curry, fish and chips, jacket potatoes, salads and traditional Sunday roasts are also available. The Compasses boasts a spacious beer garden and hosts a monthly Folk Night. The pub also hosts two beer festivals, one in August (featuring vintage tractor ploughing) and one in December, with proceeds going to Farleigh Hospice.
