This well-established hotel, now under new management, is set within 14 acres of mature woodlands and gardens, with stunning views across the Galloway countryside. This ‘forgotten’ area of Scotland is home to a plethora of wildlife, and there are plenty of opportunities for enjoying the natural beauty of the landscape. The hotel is just a short drive away from the wilds of the Glenkens and within walking distance of Castle Douglas, the pretty market town that forms the heart of the area.

The hotel scores highly food-wise as well, with a daily changing menu that incorporates local ingredients and boasts a great variety of dishes to be enjoyed in the welcoming and friendly restaurant. The crisp Parmesan basket filled with soft Brie, olives, sun-blushed tomatoes and balsamic dressing is a lovely Mediterranean medley, and a perfect way to begin a meal. The assiette of smoked goose and duck breast, resting on a bed of fresh leaves and drizzled with herb oils, is a fragrant, sophisticated light bite. The main courses won’t disappoint either. Try lamb served with poached pear and a mint and red wine reduction for a rich and succulent meal. An excellent wine list complements the menu.

For fresh air, wonderful countryside, good food and a hearty welcome, the Urr Valley Hotel is perfect. This is real luxury in the heart of the countryside.
