Situated in the picturesque village of Peterston-super-Ely, just a four mile journey through the beautiful meandering lanes from Cardiff, The Sportmans Rest is the quintessential country inn. The buildings, which are over a century old, were once home to the local blacksmiths. However, in keeping with the moving times, the pub has recently been refurbished with a contemporary yet traditional feel - keeping the traditional log fire, gentle lighting and welcoming atmosphere that makes it so popular. Relax outside enjoying the friendly buzz on the restaurant's terrace - the perfect place for a fresh summer's day and a spot of alfresco dining.

Synonymous with fresh homemade cooking, The Sportsmans Rest prides itself on its partnerships with local suppliers and on using high-quality Welsh produce to create dishes for the comprehensive and exciting menu. The menu is priced to please, with starters ranging from £4 for Welsh rarebit, up to £5.45 for the likes of moules mariniere. The main courses include fresh grilled sea bass served on the chef's special risotto, rack of Welsh lamb or, if you prefer more traditional food, you'll find homemade faggots, beer-battered cod, or a perfectly grilled rib-eye. You mustn't overlook the dessert menu, which includes award-winning wild fig ice cream, locally produced by the village's very own fruit garden.

There are regular lunchtime specials with smaller plates, and Sundays have established such a reputation for the choice of fresh roasted meats, homemade gravy and hearty portions that you'll have to make a reservation to avoid disappointment. The drinks menu is comprehensive and exciting, offering regular and guest ales and a full wine list with Champagne and wines from French to New World. The inn is also famous in its own right; also known as the 'Deri Arms', The Sportmans Rest doubles as the local pub in the BBC series Pobol y Cwm. A warm and relaxing welcome awaits you from the family and their charming and engaging team - and once here, you'll want to stay a while.
