Sometimes you just can't shake the hankering for some good old-fashioned pub grub, and that's what you'll find at The Cottage in Splott. This charming pub, five minutes from the town centre, is perfect for cosying up with a traditional British dish away from the rush of the city's busy streets.

The Cottage is a real family business, with manageress Julia Alderman's parents working in the kitchen to deliver the home-cooked taste that is making it such a popular lunchtime refuelling spot.

The menu offers a grill section, with steaks starting at £6.25 and curries from £4.50. Those looking for a lighter bite can order a baguette (from £2.75) or jacket potato (from £2.75), and side order options include garlic bread at £1.50.

I ordered the soup of the day, which was tomato, at a very reasonable £2, followed by a lasagne verdi with the creamiest bechamel sauce, served with chunky chips and salad (£4.50). Puddings start at £2.50 and we ordered a hot apple pie with ice cream and a chocolate sponge with custard - very naughty but ever so nice. children's meals are also available, as are Sunday lunches for £5.50, with an OAP special. Next time you happen across Splott, pop into The Cottage - you'll be very glad you did.
