This charming eatery is something of a hidden gem. Its location makes it perfect for those who want a quick lunch while shopping, but it is an equally relaxing spot if you want a quiet snack in a great peoplewatching location.
Breakfast is served from 9am until 11am and there’s a great selection, from bacon and fried eggs in a fresh, floury bap (£3.75) to boiled egg and soldiers (£3.40). This year they are particularly proud of their house espresso-blend coffee – ethically traded, freshly roasted, and prepared by award-winning baristas, it provides an amazing coffee experience. From 11am until 4pm, there is a comprehensive range of baguettes, toasties, jacket potatoes and salads to choose from, as well as a good variety of hot meals. There is something here for everyone’s taste; for example, the vegan salad with avocado, tomatoes, olives, artichokes and a medley of other fresh and wholesome flavours is served with a baguette (£6.50), and is a tasty and filling option whether you’re vegan or not. The vegetarian chilli (£7.75) is excellent value for money and is served with rice, Greek yoghurt, cheese, avocado, mixed leaves and crisp tortilla chips – spicy and tasty in equal measure. All portion sizes are generous, particularly the jacket potatoes, which are freshly baked each day and come with a variety of toppings such as cheese and onion and tuna mayonnaise (both £5.40). Cakes and pastries are equally tempting – the hot chocolate muffin is served with chocolate sauce and ice cream (£3.75), and the pancake with bananas and ice cream is accompanied by hot fudge sauce (£4.20). Make your meal extra special with a glass of fine wine, Champagne, or simply a bottle of beer. The service is quick and friendly, and it’s reassuring to know that the plan sources only fresh local ingredients, many of which are organic – for example the milk, eggs, double cream and salad leaves. It is this that gives the food its full flavour. Next time you’re passing, give the plan café bar a try; it may just become your regular haunt.
