Pearl of the Orient
Pearl of the Orient has stood proudly within Mermaid Quay for almost ten years. With views of the Millennium Centre and the waterfront, live piano performances most evenings, and ornamental fish tanks dividing the seating area into sections, the scene is set perfectly for a truly special meal.
The menu here cannot fail to please, with variations of Cantonese, Peking, Malaysian and Szechwan dishes, as well as a substantial vegetarian selection. The excellent choice of appetisers took some time to peruse, but we finally decided on a selection of hot hors d’oeuvres – crispy spring rolls, Malaysian style grilled satay chicken skewers, and scrumptious beef served in a perfect cucumber cup. The deep-fried boneless chicken in honey and lemon sauce exceeded expectations, as did my partner’s sautéed beef in chilli and black bean sauce. A luscious pannacotta and lemon and lime cheesecake rounded things off perfectly. There really is something for everyone; you’re sure to find something to tempt your tastebuds, whether you’ve time to linger or you’re in a hurry. With fresh flavours and attention to detail, a meal at Pearl of the Orient is an experience you won’t be forgetting for a while. Impeccable service from a professional team completes the experience – this restaurant is in a league of its own.
