Mulberry Street
This laid-back eatery, named after the street in New York City’s Little Italy, is right in the heart of upmarket Llandaff and should be marked on everyone’s dining map. Mulberry Street has been going strong for nearly five years, and was recently purchased by a former manager, Geraint Rees, who has been a mainstay since the beginning. Geraint has added new blood in the shape of head chef David Humphreys, who has a wealth of experience in Michelin-starred restaurants and well-known hotels – such as the boutique Cotswold House hotel and the Elephant in Torquay, owned by Simon Hulstone.
The decor is simple and understated, with real wood flooring and walls shaded in burnt amber and dusk blue. The menu is similarly classy, and includes a selection of 28 tapas-style ‘little dishes’ (three for the price of two available at lunchtimes) alongside the à la carte options. We decided to start with antipasto and a selection of breads – some baked in-house and some by a baker in Nelson – followed by the creamy spinach and mascarpone risotto. We also tucked into the earthy pan-fried wood pigeon and bean cassoulet, the fish of the day – which was a pan-fried sea bream – and the sirloin steak which, as it came from Carmarthenshire Welsh Blacks, was absolutely awesome. To say there’s something for everyone here would be an understatement. You can find Mulberry Street on Facebook.
