Small, friendly and relaxed, Izakaya Japanese Tavern promises the authentic sushi and saki experience.

But it's not all raw fish. For £5-£6 each, you can pick and choose from an amazing range of dishes, from pork casserole to pumpkin dumplings. I would particularly recommend the chicken teriyaki, the agidashi tofu and the assorted pickles. There are no 'courses' as such. You order the food and it arrives, Japanese-style, when it arrives.

If pronouncing the names of the dishes and working out what to have for yourself seems too taxing, set meals are available. Similarly, you can opt to sit at tables and chairs if sitting at the four low slung traditional Japanese tables seems too uncomfortable.

We went for authenticity and had much fun in doing so, ably guided by the friendly and knowledgeable waiting staff. The Café-style ambience makes it a great daytime venue too. And it feels nice to leave a restaurant feeling like the food you've just eaten is doing you good.

Ring ahead to check spaces are available since the place is often full.
