The word ‘ichiban’ – meaning ‘number one’ – really embodies the ethos of this restaurant, which prioritises first-class food and service. As a result of this very successful strategy, the Ichiban team opened a second branch, on Albany Road. Commitment, creativity and authenticity are to be found at the heart of this Cardiff favourite, which takes pride in perfecting each dish before it is served and certainly doesn’t cut corners when it comes to quality.

Aiming to provide an innovative dining experience rooted in Japanese tradition, Ichiban offers a delicious range of freshly prepared sushi, including octopus and surf clam varieties, spider maki and vibrant rainbow maki – which skilfully packs salmon, tuna, squid, caviar and sesame into a California roll. Specials such as fried mackerel and grilled eel in teriyaki sauce are simply delicious, while the yaki udon, comprising fried udon noodles with scallop, squid, mussels, shrimps and mixed vegetables, is a must for seafood lovers. Why not finish off with a generous dollop of sesame ice cream or some deep-fried mango? There’s also a great selection of beers, wines, spirits and Japanese sake. Ichiban provides a refreshingly healthy takeaway alternative – order online or by telephone, or have your meal delivered to your door.
