Located on the first floor of Cardiff’s St David’s Hall above the busy thoroughfare, you’ll find Celebrity Restaurant. With a great view of The Hayes, the dining room is an oasis of calm, with excellent service and a genteel atmosphere.

I joined the shoppers and regular diners in sampling the carvery – a bargain at £8.25. We started with a portion of minestrone soup, followed by a hearty helping of roast lamb, mint sauce and seasonal vegetables. There is also a ‘lite bite’ menu and an à la carte menu. Expect to find starters such as a Greek salad with feta cheese, beef tomatoes and marinated olives, served with rocket leaves and balsamic vinegar (£5.45), followed by salmon with a slow-melting dill and lime butter, new potatoes, carrots and spinach (£7.95). Be sure to leave room for dessert; the creme brulée (£4.25), with raspberry compote and chocolate shortbread, is pure indulgence. A selection of wine is available with prices from £14 a bottle. Look out for gourmet evenings, rugby lunches and convenient pre-show suppers, where you can preorder your selection to be ready on arrival.
