Casanova
Tucked away in a city centre side street, Casanova is one of Cardiff's most dazzling hidden gems, its understated exterior giving little indication of the gastronomic delights that await inside. Owners Luca and Angelo Montuori pride themselves on the uniqueness of each and every dish. They are particularly proud - and rightly so - of their Salt Marsh lamb; reared locally, the meat is already delicately seasoned due to the salty grass on which the lambs graze. Served with red wine jus, roast flat mushroom and parsnip purée, this dish is an absolute must. The rest of the seasonal menu is small but perfectly formed, meaning each dish is always available. Changed every few months, it provides an excellent choice of well-considered choices to cater for even the most discerning palate. Casanova shies away from generic Italian fare and instead offers bona fide Italian cuisine. When I visited, I sampled the exquisite risotto al funghi. Made with carnaroli rice and spring white truffle butter, it is gastronomic heaven. Pasta lovers are advised to try the linguine alla puttanesca; a generous serving of linguine cooked in tomato and chilli and liberally sprinkled with flavoursome olives and capers. The semi fredo is a perfect dessert - light and creamy with crunchy amaretti biscuits and a drop of amaretto. Diners can order certain fish dishes in advance, Casanova happily caters for parties with tailor-made menus, and a two-course lunch menu is available from Monday to Saturday at the bargain price of just £8.95. They also open on certain Sundays in conjunction with Millennium Stadium events, providing more of their authentic taste of Italy
