Within the charming village of Penmark lies The Six Bells, a listed pub and restaurant dating back as far as the 16th Century. While some original features remain in the bar, the restaurant has been brought right up to date, with warm colours and modern touches creating a comfortable and stylish setting.

There is something for everyone on the menu, with traditional pub classics alongside a selection of dishes for the more adventurous. I began with soup of the day, which was leek and potato, while my companion plumped for the less conventional Oriental beef - strips of beef sautéed in hoisin sauce and served on a bed of bean sprouts. The beef and mushroom pie, served with seasonal vegetables, was a hearty and delicious main course, while my companion's chicken supreme was succulent and flavoursome, filled with mozzarella and tomatoes and served with red pepper sauce and tagliatelle. Two delicious, beautifully presented dishes followed - a scrumptious frosted carrot cake and an indulgent white chocolate bomb.

In 2008 James Barnsley, Julie Hawkins and Taran Pryse Jones bought The Six Bells, and they have managed to successfully rejuvenate this once partly-derelict establishment. With a private function room and an excellent lunch menu, there is plenty on offer for locals and visitors alike. The Six Bells and Signature Restaurant has been given a new lease of life and is well worth a visit.
