Michel Roux Jr - London for everyone

London is still one of the world’s most exciting cities when it comes to eating out. There are few places that offer so much variety, with food from all corners of the globe served from the capital’s kitchens. In an ever-changing industry, London continues to lead the way, always asking, ‘what’s next?’, but balancing this with keeping classic cooking styles well and truly alive. The result is a city that offers something to suit every possible taste and pocket.

I love living and working here, making my own contribution to the rich foodie scene – from a guest appearance on this year’s Comic Relief to winning the coveted British Tourism Society Award. I received the award on the back of my television show Michel Roux’s Service, which aimed to show youngsters what the service industry is all about, encouraging them to consider it as a real career option.

With three London restaurants to run, it’s been a busy year. Once Toby Stuart, head chef at my second London restaurant, Roux at Parliament Square, was settled in and doing a fantastic job, it was time to turn our attention to the bar. The Pembury, as it is known, was re-launched earlier this year. Meanwhile, Roux at The Landau, my latest venture, which I opened with my father Albert, has been flourishing.

I have also been busy filming series four of MasterChef: The Professionals, which will be screened in the autumn. If you’re big fan of the show, you’ll be able to join me, the other judges and finalists at the MasterChef Live show this November. The BBC’s Great British Food Revival returns to our screens in November, when I’ll be championing another endangered food in this second series.

Although a bit of a washout thanks to our country’s unpredictable summers, Taste of London in June was a great success. I was delighted, yet again, to be in such good company; with the Le Gavroche chefs being joined by the likes of Chris Galvin, Gary Rhodes and Pierre Koffman. Keep an eye out for details of the 2012 event. In the meantime, if you fancy getting out and about, London’s markets provide plenty of inspiration as well as top-quality ingredients. From the artisan producers of Borough Market to the farmers’ markets held all over the city, Londoners (chefs and novices alike) are never short of access to excellent produce.

Explore London’s restaurants, try somewhere new and make your own contribution to keeping London at the forefront of dining excellence.
