Ian Penn comes home to the Midlands

I came home to the Midlands to join the New Hall Hotel family earlier this year, and I’m proud to introduce you to this year’s Warwickshire & Birmingham Food & Drink Guide.

My team and I are working together to provide our guests, whether they are here for the weekend or an afternoon with friends, with lovingly prepared English breakfasts and decadently presented afternoon teas featuring fresh artisan breads with interesting fillings, indulgent pastries and tarts. We are always striving to create a dining experience in our restaurants that is faultless and elegant. Such an experience means that the food must be fantastic, requiring excellent ingredients – something that we are far from short of in this part of the world.

The belt that runs between Birmingham and Warwickshire is home to extensive farming and provides us with a raft of local suppliers. We are always working to develop strong relationships with these suppliers to ensure the produce we are working with is the finest possible, and available just minutes away, not miles. Some of my favourite suppliers include Loves for fruit and vegetables – some of the best I have come across in the Midlands. At a moment’s notice they will source any requests I have and are always listening to the needs of the chef. E & P Catering Butchers is a friendly company always looking for new and exciting products. I work closely with Paul from E & P in taste tests to ensure that the quality of his meat is second to none.

These days, being excited about food extends from the restaurant dining room to the home. For those interested in cooking, local food festivals are always worth a visit – the Stratford Food & Drink Festival and the Stone Food & Drink Festival to name just a couple. These are always exciting whether I’m doing a demo or a talk, or just walking around sampling everything from bacon, olives and hand-crafted cheeses to real ales. You’re guaranteed to always walk away with a buzz.

I will close by saying that I hope you enjoy this year’s guide to the best restaurants in the Birmingham and Warwickshire area. Enjoy sampling what the region has to offer, try something new and experience our local markets which are bursting with delicious produce. I hope to see you all soon at New Hall Hotel & Spa.
